The Bring Down the Sky expansion for Mass Effect introduces Commander Shepard to an intense hostage situation on Asteroid X57. Batarian terrorists have hijacked the asteroid, positioning it on a collision course with the human colony of Terra Nova. Stopping this imminent catastrophe requires navigating rugged terrain, disabling fusion engines, and making tough moral choices.

Land on Asteroid X57 and Disable the Thrusters

Upon landing the Mako on Asteroid X57, your primary objective is to disable three massive fusion thrusters driving the asteroid toward Terra Nova. Each thruster facility is guarded by turrets, mines, and well-entrenched Batarian forces. Approaching these compounds carefully in the Mako allows you to neutralize exterior defense systems before entering the structures on foot.

Inside each facility, expect tight corridors and fierce firefights against warlord Balak's mercenaries. Deactivating the main engine controls inside each building progressively slows down the asteroid's descent. Be prepared to disarm explosive charges or deal with security turrets in some rooms to ensure the facility is completely secured.

Navigate the Minefields and Help the Engineers

While traveling between thruster stations, players can discover optional side objectives that provide deeper insight into the crisis. Searching the asteroid allows you to assist surviving human engineers and track down missing surveyors scattered across the bleak landscape. Exploring these locations rewards Shepard with additional experience points and valuable equipment upgrades.

Careful driving is essential due to proximity minefields placed around key areas. Paying attention to warning signs and staying on designated paths prevents severe damage to the Mako. Clearing these hazard zones makes traversing Asteroid X57 significantly safer during the remainder of the assignment.

Confronting Balak and Making the Final Choice

After shutting down all three thrusters, Shepard tracks Balak to his main base of operations. Confronting the Batarian leader leads to the climax of the mission, where players must weigh immediate justice against innocent lives. Balak rigged explosive charges near the remaining human hostages and threatens to detonate them if Shepard attempts to arrest or kill him.

Choosing to attack Balak triggers a tough combat encounter but ensures the terrorist leader pays for his crimes. Alternatively, letting Balak escape saves Kate Bowman and the other hostages, earning Paragon morality points. Whichever path you choose, completing this mission successfully protects Terra Nova from total destruction.
